This was the perfect spot for reading though I spent as much time looking at Ben Nevis as the words on the page.

A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder was a fun thriller, however, I was in no rush to finish it and some parts were rather unrealistic. Even though I enjoyed it and it definitely gave me Veronica Mars vibes (as promised by @bonus_pumpkin ), I don’t think I will bother picking up the next book in the series. 4.25

I fell in love with this stunning First Law map created by @tallshepherdpress when I first laid eyes on it. Decided to get an aluminium print for my reading room and it turned out even better than I’d hoped. 😍

Seems it goes really well with the special editions from @thebrokennbinding as well.

The first chapter of The Blade Itself had me hooked and I’ve been obsessed with The First Law world ever since. Only Red Country and Sharp Ends left and then I will likely have to reread The Age of Madness trilogy.

I don’t remember ever being as excited as when I had my @thebrokennbinding subscription confirmed knowing they were doing the special editions for The First Law trilogy 🙈 I may have cried happy tears.

👩🏻‍🍳 Lemon Drizzle
250g unsalted butter
250g (+1 tbsp) caster sugar
3 large eggs
250g self raising flour
Pinch of salt
3 lemons
100g Icing sugar

Use a handheld or freestanding mixer to beat together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add one egg at a time mixing well after each addition. Add the zest of three lemons. On a low speed or using a wooden spoon, mix in the flour and salt until just combined making sure not to overwork the batter. Pour the batter into a loaf tin lined with baking parchment.

Bake at 160°C on the middle shelf for 40-50 minutes until a skewer comes out clean. When the cake is nearly baked, heat up the juice of 1.5 lemons with a spoonful of caster sugar until the sugar has dissolved and simmer for a few seconds. Take the cake out of the oven and use the skewer to poke holes all over. Slowly pour the lemon/sugar syrup over the cake so it sinks in all over.

Whilst you are waiting for the cake to cool you can mix the icing sugar with some of the remaining lemon juice until you get a good consistency. Once cooled take the cake out the tin and pour over the lemon/icing sugar mixture. Leave until set.

When I picked up The Bone Shard Daughter I wasn’t expecting a multiple POV fantasy but it was so much fun. The smuggler POV was perhaps my favourite.

My cat is giving me Mephi vibes here. 😻🐈‍⬛

Unfortunately the last book in the trilogy won’t be released for ages yet so I’m having to pace myself. 4.25 ⭐️

I don’t remember ever finishing a trilogy in less than a week before!

The Folk of the Air series was just what I needed - an easy to grasp yet mysterious world to get lost in. The story also has plenty of twists and turns to keep you reading.

I actually enjoyed the second book the most which is perhaps unusual for a trilogy. The last book offers a satisfying conclusion though I wouldn’t have been upset if there had been a fourth book. 4.5 ⭐️

Couldn’t wait for this 2022 release to arrive.😍

Although the synopsis may sound confusing, the story is very easy to follow. The author has such a clever, beautiful way of writing that is concise yet extremely expressive.

I really hope she will write many more books soon. In the meantime I can’t wait to reread Sea of Tranquility and pick up The Glass Hotel.

First non-fiction of 2022 and it was a good one.

An extremely sad and challenging read, yet I feel everyone should pick this up if only to get a different perspective on mental illnesses such as schizophrenia from someone who had to deal with it and its potential consequences on a very personal level.

The author brings across how he feels about his brother and about what happened incredibly well, which can’t have been easy to do, and I won’t even try to summarise it because I could not. Just read it!

Have you read any good non-fiction this year? I could do with some more recommendations!

I may never have picked up Swan Song by Robert McCammon if it hadn’t been for @the_evergrowing_library ‘s recommendation. Really enjoying it!

Spent the day preparing Viennoiserie pastry for this sausage roll. The smell alone when it comes out the oven makes it all worth it.

🍋 🍰 Whenever I followed a lemon drizzle recipe in the past it never quite hit the spot. So I decided to make up my own and it turned out exactly how I wanted 🤯🙀

🌟🌟🌟🌟 The first book of The Green Bone

🌟🌟🌟🌟
The first book of The Green Bone Saga has interesting, loveable characters and some unpredictable turns. A good entry point for readers new to fantasy as it is based in the modern world (albeit not the real world) with just a few fantastical elements thrown in (the use of Jade to give special abilities).

Although it was action packed at times, it was also very slow. Now I do love a character driven book that spends a lot of time exploring these, however, the writing still felt very detached and matter of fact rather than different with each character (though maybe I have been forever ruined by the likes of Joe Abercrombie).

I did like how the writing really made a distinction between the island of Kekon, its capital Janloon with its clans and mythical beliefs, and the mainland/other countries that resemble a more normal modern way of life.

👩🏻‍🍳 Nigella Lawson’s Chocolate Cake (turns out even better when baked with a friend at 1am after a couple bottles of wine).
